HF Contesting — Operating & Station Strategy

HF / CONTEST OPERATING / CW + SSB + DIGITAL

HF contests reward good operators, thoughtful band selection and a radio station that stays readable in crowded spectrum. K0AXX’s approach favors knowing the RF system, using propagation intelligently and building antennas that serve the desired takeoff angles. Although I have never been a contender in HF contesting, CQWW SSB was my first experience and I have enjoyed building stations and improving my operating practices since that very busy weekend in 2008.

Contest formats are not interchangeable

Exchange requirements, assisted operating rules, power classes, scoring and allowed modes vary by event. Always use the published contest rules. Common events include ARRL International DX, November Sweepstakes, IARU HF, 160-Meter and 10-Meter contests, as well as other sponsor-run events. ARRL contest calendar lists current ARRL events.

Plan the bands before the start

Band groupOperating emphasis
160 / 80 mNighttime contacts, receiving-noise management, local noise sources and appropriate longer wire/vertical antennas.
40 mDay/night transitions, regional reach, crowded-band dynamics, common contest workhorse.
20 mWide-area and DX paths; watch time-of-day changes, antenna pattern and short/long-path possibilities.
15 / 10 mCondition-dependent long paths and high rates during favorable solar and seasonal propagation.

Running versus search-and-pounce

A running station benefits from a clean, stable signal, useful receiving selectivity and enough gain to be heard. Search-and-pounce requires efficient exchange copy and spotting within the assistance rules. Avoid staying on a band merely because the last hour was productive; check rate and multiplier potential periodically.

Antenna system and RF hygiene

Operator and logging discipline

Use an accurate clock, verify calls before logging, confirm each exchange, and record the correct band and mode. Use a logger configured for the specific contest, inspect Cabrillo export and perform a consistency check before submission. Never publish an apparent operating achievement without a checked log.
