OPERATING / COMPETITION / FIELD SKILLS
A central place for K0AXX contest preparation, mobile/rover experimentation and Field Day. The same principles—clean RF, predictable receive performance, logging accuracy and thoughtful antenna geometry—apply everywhere, but each activity has distinct rules and propagation.
Choose an operating path
Field Day
Portable station planning, safe deployment, power budgeting and operating practice.
HF Contesting
Band-by-band propagation, clean station operation, exchanges and log preparation.
VHF & Above
Grid multipliers, rovers and fixed weak-signal operation from 50 to 1296 MHz and beyond.
Rover Operations
Equipment layout, antenna placement, travel safety and grid planning.
Preparation is part of the operating result
Before a contest, check the event sponsor’s rules; print the relevant exchange; rehearse station startup; confirm interfaces, UTC clock and logging; and test equipment at the actual output power. Afterward, inspect the Cabrillo or event-specific log and record lessons before the next event.
Marshall K5QE’s influence
Marshall’s contest and weak-signal experience remains part of K0AXX.NET. The K5QE presentations archive includes his six-meter array, EME and sequencing presentations, preserved as links to original conference sources.
