It is a collection of mechanisms, each with different geometry and timing. What works on 50 MHz at noon may say little about 144, 432 or 1296 MHz at the same moment.

What to monitor

Signal / source

What it suggests

What it does not prove

50 MHz distant spots

Potential Sporadic-E, meteor-scatter or other paths

That your specific azimuth and polarization are usable

144 MHz and above reports

Real station-to-station paths at the reported time

A continuous opening over the entire region

Pressure and temperature trends

Possible stable layers and inversion-supporting weather

A tropospheric duct between two stations

Kp, solar flux and geomagnetic data

Context for HF and upper-atmosphere conditions

Direct proof of a VHF/UHF contact opportunity

Local beacon and on-air observation

Evidence within actual station and antenna constraints

Guaranteed two-way performance

Mode and bandwidth matter

FT8, MSK144 and Q65 can reveal marginal paths missed by casual listening. CW and SSB remain valuable evidence. FM often requires more margin for comfortable communication and its operating success depends strongly on antenna polarization and receiver squelch. A report about one mode must not be treated as a universal forecast for all modes.

Timing and source reliability

A good dashboard should show observation timestamps, age, service errors and the difference between live spots and model predictions. A failed source does not mean no propagation occurred. For an EM20VJ station, comparing multiple independent indicators is more valuable than trusting any single alert.

Useful resources

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center — official space-weather observations.

PSK Reporter — reception reports; access and coverage may vary.

APRS.fi — station positions and APRS activity, not a dedicated ducting sensor.

National Weather Service — weather observations and forecasts.

See also Terrestrial path planning → and Propagation modes explained →.

["post-10","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
